Hero Pose is a kneeling seat with the pelvis between the heels. Because it can place substantial pressure on the knees and ankles, sit on a block or chair and skip the pose if a comfortable supported position is unavailable.

What is Hero Pose?

Virasana is a kneeling seat often used for breathing or rest. It differs from sitting directly on the heels: in the commonly taught version the seat is between the feet, but that position is not appropriate for every knee or ankle.

How do you set up a supported seat?

Use a firm block or folded blankets and avoid forcing the feet or knees into place.

  1. Kneel with padding beneath the knees and tops of the feet.
  2. Place a block or cushion between the heels and sit on it only if the knees remain comfortable.
  3. Keep the hands on the thighs and torso relaxed; do not lean back to increase the stretch.
  4. Leave the position while it remains comfortable, then shift forward onto the hands before standing.

How can you modify Hero Pose?

Raise the seat higher, add padding beneath the ankles, or sit on a chair with the feet supported. If the knees remain uncomfortable, choose another seat such as Easy Pose.

When should you stop or modify?

Leave immediately for knee or ankle pain, numbness, tingling, or pressure that does not ease. This draft is general education and has not received named teacher review.

Common question: Is sitting between the heels required?

No. A raised seat or chair is a valid alternative, and some practitioners should choose a different posture.
